Panasonic S1 full test at Dpreview: “among the most capable and the best-built stills/video hybrids in its class”
Dpreview published their full Panasonic S1 review. The camera earned a Silver Award:
The Panasonic DC-S1 is among the most capable and the best-built stills/video hybrids in its class, with excellent 24MP Image quality and impressive oversampled 4K video. But the camera’s Depth from Defocus autofocus system is a bit less reliable than its peers, especially when photographing moving subjects, and the EVF experience tends to be distracting when using continuous AF, due to DFD ‘focus wobble’. Among stiff competition, these shortcomings seem amplified.
The S1, along with its higher resolution brother, the DC-S1R, are the most professionally-built mirrorless full-frame cameras currently on the market – they are also the largest. The result is a camera with a big, comfortable grip and extensive direct controls. By comparison, their build-quality makes some of the competition feel downright dinky. That said, the S1 is very big and heavy.

Panasonic S1R High Resolution images versus the $10,000 Fuji GFX100 images

How well does the Panasonic S1R when you compare it with the much more expensive Fuji GFX100? Well there is surely a difference if you compare the 47MP files with the 103MP files from the Fuji using the Dpreview Scene Tool:
But the S1R does much better when you compare the High Resolution images against the Fuji:
It shows the S1R can outperform the Fuji in conditions where you can make full use of Panasonic’s High res mode!

The Panasonic S1H has been announced but there is still a lot I want to know including:
– Will the 6K/5.9K be 10-bit 4:2:2? What crop factors will be applied if any?
– Will the HDMI output have any special features?
– Will be see RAW video internally or over HDMI?
– Why is the a vent/fan?
– Will we see something more than 6K?
– Does the S1H have in body stabilization (IBIS)?
– Will the S1H actually be $4000 at launch?
