It’s official: S1H Firmware Development Underway for 5.9K/29.97p and C4K/59.94p RAW Video Data Output to Atomos Ninja V

Press text:

Panasonic is proud to announce the development of firmware for the LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera which enables the output of 5.9K/29.97p RAW and C4K/59.94p video data to the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020

The LUMIX S1H is the world’s first camera to combine professional-level video quality, the high mobility of a mirrorless camera and a Full-Frame sensor. It is currently capable of video recording at 6K/24p*1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 59.94p 4K/C4K.*2 *3 The LUMIX S1H will be introduced in late September 2019.

Panasonic has a long history of collaboration with Atomos.  This relationship will deliver new RAW video functionality for the S1H.  5.9K up to 29.97p and C4K*3 up to 59.94p in RAW delivered over HDMI is in development. With this firmware Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on the Atomos Ninja V.

A LUMIX S1H prototype with this firmware will be exhibited along with the Atomos Ninja V in the Panasonic booth (Booth No. C45, Hall 11) at the IBC2019 (International Broadcasting Convention) to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13-17, 2019.

Panasonic S1H Footage & first impressions by Newsshooter

Newsshooter writes:

My initial impressions of the S1H are mixed. I think it is a good camera, but like every camera, it has its flaws. I think a lot of this has to do with how much today’s cameras tend to get hyped up with tease announcements. These teases arguably have the effect of setting high expectations that sometimes are not always met.

The image quality is good when you don’t put the camera into situations where it is forced to work hard. In mixed lighting conditions and scenes where you would like to have nice highlight roll off it is going to struggle a bit if you are comparing it to a much more expensive camera.

I did find some of the images noisy, despite the camera having a dual native ISO.

Usability, for the most part, is good, and it’s nice that you get unlimited recording times. I like how you can hot-swap cards during recording, and that the camera uses SD cards.

The battery life is really good. The menu system could be improved, but for the most part it will get the job done.

The autofocus isn’t good and the rolling shutter might be a problem for some users.

Despite its flaws, I think Panasonic has set the bar fairly high for what you should expect out of a high-end full-frame mirrorless camera. I look forward to getting hold of a production version of the camera for a full review.

Sigma announced this new MC-31 PL to L-mount adapter for cinematographers

PL-L Mount Converter
Development of SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-31 announced

SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki) is pleased to announce its development of SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-31, a converter that allows PL mount lenses to be used on L-Mount cameras.
By using SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-31, users can use PL mount cine lenses, which are widely used in the filmmaking industry, on the SIGMA fp and other L-Mount cameras.
A production version of this new product will be on display at IBC 2019, scheduled to take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13 to 17, 2019.

Launch: TBD
Price: TBD
Accessories: TBD

1. Shim adjustments
MC-31 has shim adjustments on two points of the mount. Adjustments can be made with a shim kit (included) on the camera side of the mount, or a shim for ARRI digital cameras on the lens side.

2. All-metal construction for excellent durability
With an aluminum-alloy body and strong brass mount and locking ring, MC-31 boasts excellent durability.
It is also designed to be secured on the mount of the SIGMA fp with a screw thread, ensuring an even more secure connection between the lens and the camera. This allows users to shoot steady without the lens rattling even after the long-term use.

3. Tripod socket
The removable tripod socket allows MC-31 to be attached to a tripod or other filmmaking accessories such as a camera cage.

4. Suitable for various shooting conditions
With the screw thread removed, the stopper of the locking ring is released. This makes it possible to use MC-31 with a PL mount lens that requires tighter mounting than the MC-31’s specifications, allowing the lens to lock securely in place on the converter.
The markings on the upper part of the converter are in the same luminous paint as the one used for SIGMA CINE LENS, helping make it easier to replace or adjust a lens in the dark.

(L5) First leaked images of the new Leica SL2 camera code named “Vader”

Nokishita just leaked this image of  the Leica SL camera. It has some small difference from the previous model (see it here). Now it has a near full body texture and a “ring” around  the mount. Also the grip seems to be slightly curved.

More important  are the changes inside:

– New 47  megapixel sensor
– Cine mode video
– 4K video

Code name of the camera seems to be”Vader” because of the low light capabilities 🙂

Announcement should happen pretty soon…
